Sycuan Donates $10,000 to Meals on Wheels

July 12, 2021

Sycuan Casino Resort proudly donated $10,000 to Meals on Wheels San Diego County in support of their Fishing for Charity event. Sycuan has been a proud partner of Meals on Wheels San Diego County since 2010 and a longtime supporter of this very special charity event.

“It’s supporters like Sycuan that make it possible to feed nearly 2,000 seniors a day across San Diego,” said Amie Brown, chief external affairs officer at Meals on Wheels San Diego County. “COVID-19 hit all of us hard, especially the most vulnerable – our seniors. The demand for our services increased by 47% almost immediately when so many seniors experienced heightened levels of isolation and food scarcity. While we were working to meet the need, our supporters stepped up to make sure we never missed a meal. Thank you to Sycuan and all of our supporters for making it possible to deliver hot meals and warm smiles to our seniors and finally be able to put on events like Fishing for Charity once again!”

About Meals on Wheels San Diego County

From humble beginnings in 1960 with a few women deciding to deliver meals to their elderly neighbors, to serving nearly a half a million meals throughout the entire county today, Meals on Wheels is devoted to the health, safety and well-being of San Diego seniors.

Meals on Wheels is the only agency providing meals for 7 days a week, including holidays. Additionally, we cover the entire county, including delivery into the over 3,049 square miles of rural and unincorporated areas. Meals on Wheels San Diego County subsidizes 60% of the costs for meals, delivery, and other services provided, regardless of a senior’s ability to pay.

Distributing home-delivered meals and safety checks could not be accomplished without the help of our very large and caring volunteer workforce who deliver meals with a hug and a smile and ensure our homebound seniors are OK. Frequently the volunteer may be the only person the senior sees all day, providing human contact and a safety net, particularly for those seniors living alone. Lives are saved nearly every week as a result of acquiring the proper emergency personnel for someone who has fallen, had a stroke, or is simply in need of additional resources.
