July 1, 2020 Update: Address

To our Valued Guests,

We’d like to address the misinformation that’s being shared about our property. While it is disheartening to see and read, we are far more concerned with the peace of mind of our guests and Team Members when it comes to our Health & Sanitation program. Admittedly, no matter how diligent we remain, we cannot promise perfection and thoroughly understand that we are in the midst of a global pandemic. Please know we are working very hard!

Sycuan’s health and safety plan has been reviewed and approved by the Sycuan Gaming Commission (SGC), the agency charged by law as the primary regulator for the tribe’s gaming operation and ensuring the health and safety of patrons and employees. The SGC reviewed and incorporated into their pre-opening checklist guidance from the NIGC, EPA, OSHA; the White House gating criteria and related recommendations from CDC, the California Governor’s office, California Department of Public Health, San Diego County Public Health Department; requirements of the tribal/state compact; as well as various other industry standards and best practices. In all, the casino management team was expected to comply with over 700 individual compliance measures before certification. Additionally, we understand that we are in a very fluid situation and are consistently looking for ways to improve our protocols and processes, especially with the constructive feedback you provide. To further improve our Health & Sanitation program, we will be implementing the following;

  • Call to Action Team; a new team is being formed by our Sycuan Safety Committee whose sole purpose will be to enforce health & sanitation protocols on the casino floor.
  • Tables Games Officially Non-Smoking; given the proximity of guests to our table games dealers, the entire table games area will be non-smoking beginning midnight 7/02/2020.
  • Clean Team; our 24 hour Clean Team will now be easily identifiable in bright neon shirts.

In case you missed it, Sycuan is now an active county COVID-19 testing site, where we are providing free tests to the public, Team Members and tribal members through the County of San Diego. For more information, please visit: https://bit.ly/find-COVID-testing-SD.

As part of their standard protocol, the county investigates many dozens of new COVID-19 cases each day. Recently, contact tracing indicates that potentially four customers unrelated to each other who tested positive may have visited Sycuan within the county’s time frame. As a result and as good community partners, we’re doing all we can to support the county in their investigation.

We have had three Team Members test positive for COVID-19. We are thankful that these Team Members immediately took the responsible steps that were asked of them. This allowed us to follow the protocols set forth by our Health & Sanitation program to confidently mitigate the risk and potential spread of the virus on our property. We will continue to aggressively execute our Health & Sanitation program, with temperature checks, mandatory face masks, social distancing, sanitization efforts, closed or reduced operations for many venues, and much more, to keep our guests and Team Members as safe as possible.

Reopening our business was not an option. It is essential to the financial wellbeing of our community and Team Members. The Sycuan Fire Department and Golden Eagle Hotshots, Kumeyaay Community College, Sycuan Tribal Police Department, Inter-Tribal Vocational Rehabilitation Programs, Sycuan Medical Dental Center, and more rely on the revenue stream generated by the casino resort to operate and thrive.

With all of that said, we would like to remind you that we ALL have a responsibility; as friends, neighbors and patrons of businesses, to comply with the health and safety protocols put in place to keep our communities safe. When it comes to taking that risk, every time we walk out our doors, it is our own personal responsibility to mitigate each and every risk as best we can on an individual level. We hope you can continue to do your part, as we most definitely will be doing ours. If you are uncomfortable visiting businesses at this time, we implore you to do what you think is best for you and your family. Please know that we are doing all we can to keep Sycuan and our environments as safe as possible for our guests and Team Members alike.

Sincerely,

Rob Cinelli
General Manager

May 13, 2020 Update: We have a date!

Sycuan Casino Resort to Reopen on May 20 at 12PM
Property to Open in Phases with Aggressive Health and Sanitation Program

“Over the past several weeks, we have made extensive changes at our property and implemented an aggressive health and sanitation program to ensure we are doing everything we can to protect our guests and team members for our reopening,” said Cody J. Martinez, Chairman, Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation. “We are slowly opening select venues and gaming areas in phase one of our reopening and will continue to evaluate our reopening strategy to maintain a safe environment for all. We are excited to welcome back our guests and start bringing back the hospitality, gaming and fun that Sycuan Casino Resort is known for. I want to thank our guests and team members in advance for their patience as our additional safety measures will undoubtedly create some inconveniences for them, but please know they were put in place for a good reason.”

Sycuan plans to reopen its property in phases, with select gaming machines, restaurants and other amenities remaining closed in the initial phase. Time between phases is unknown and will depend on the successful execution of each phase.

During phase one, food and beverage venues will have limited hours of operation with select venues open to include Double-Down Grill, House of Fortune, Rank & File and Hangry’s Sunset Deli and Pizza. Food service will be available for to-go orders and sit-down dining service will be limited to allow for physical distancing between guests.

Every other slot machine will be turned off for a safer distance between players and table games will be limited to a max of three players per table. All gaming areas, slot machines and table games will be cleaned frequently. Bingo and poker will remain closed in the initial phase and will reopen at a later date that is still unknown.

Hotel service and guest amenities will be limited with valet, room service, Spa Ritual and Retreat Pool & Cabanas remaining closed in the initial phase. High-contact areas including elevators, escalators, door handles and lobby areas will be cleaned and maintained often.

Sycuan plans to re-evaluate and make adjustments in the coming weeks and months to slowly open the remaining venues and amenities when it is safe to do so.

Additionally, during the closure, Sycuan recently announced an extensive and aggressive health and sanitation program. The new program includes several new initiatives such as the use of a self-cleaning antimicrobial coating throughout the property, thermal cameras at entrances for temperature detection, physical distancing practices including floor decals, additional cleaning protocols, plexiglass shields, personal protective equipment (PPE), comprehensive team member training, safety and hygiene signage and several other procedures throughout the property to ensure a safe environment.

May 7, 2020 Update: Health & Sanitation Program

Sycuan Casino Resort Implements an Aggressive Health and Sanitation Program
Antimicrobial Coating, Thermal Cameras, Physical Distancing and More

Sycuan Casino Resort announced today that the organization has created and implemented an extensive and aggressive health and sanitation program to safeguard guests, team members and the surrounding community. The new program outlines several new initiatives throughout the property to ensure a safe and healthy environment upon reopening.

“Our new health and sanitation program is extremely important to Sycuan, because it demonstrates our commitment to protecting the health and safety of our guests, team members and community as a whole,” said Cody J. Martinez, chairman, Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation. “We are taking all of these new safety measures very seriously and will continue to improve and implement processes as needed for our reopening. We want everyone to feel confident that we’re doing all we can to safeguard their health while they stay and play at Sycuan Casino Resort.”

One of the major initiatives in the new program includes an exciting partnership with San Diego-based company, TruClean to apply its self-cleaning antimicrobial surface coating throughout Sycuan Casino Resort and Sycuan Market and gas station to create a safer experience for guests. TruClean’s surface-bonding “sword-like” coating is registered internationally as long-term disinfectant that destroys bacteria and viruses on contact. Countries including South Korea, Singapore, China, Brazil and South Africa are actively using this surface coating technology and this antimicrobial coating is an EPA registered treated article that inhibits the growth of microorganisms with a single application for up to a year.

TruClean’s invisible, non-toxic coating has been applied throughout the property, including restaurants and bars, gaming machines and tables, back of house service and team member areas, kitchens, shuttle busses, restrooms, handrails, escalators, elevators, buttons, chairs, dining tables, countertops, ATM’s, POS systems, gas pumps, flooring, windows, doors and many more high-contact touch points. Sycuan will also be implementing new sanitation protocols using TruClean’s self-apply product, TruClean 90, as part of its aggressive health and sanitation program.

Additionally, Sycuan’s team will begin using thermal cameras for temperature detection for both guests and team members. All guests and team members are required to wear a face covering, and points of entry into the property will be limited to allow Sycuan’s security team to conduct a non-invasive temperature check. Team members or guests confirmed to have a temperature over 100.0°F will not be permitted entry to the property and will be asked to seek evaluation from their health care provider.

Guests will be directed to practice physical distancing with floor decals to display standing at least six feet away from people they have not traveled with while standing in lines, using elevators or moving around the property. Sycuan has also installed plexiglass shields in close contact areas, such as casino cashiers, restaurant cashiers, Club Sycuan Desks, VIP host stations and hotel check-in.

Several additional safety and hygiene signage have been posted throughout the property outlining the proper way to wear, handle and dispose of masks, as well as reminders of proper health and hygiene practices in both front of house and back of house areas. Additional hand sanitizing stations have also been installed in driveways, reception areas, the casino floor, restaurants, elevator landings areas and more.

Table games will be limited to a max of three players per table, every other slot machine will be turned off for a safer distance between players and all slots and tables will be cleaned frequently.

Team members will be required and provided with personal protective equipment (PPE) to wear during their shifts and will be trained extensively on new health and sanitation protocols. Teams with frequent guest contact will be given more comprehensive training on how to do so in a manner that protects not only the guest, but themselves. Additional time clocks have been installed and spread out throughout the property and team member schedules will be staggered throughout the day to reduce crowding in back-of-house areas. Directional signage has also been installed in back-of-house areas to control the flow of traffic to ensure that team members maintain physical distancing.

If a team member or guest is noticed exhibiting any of the symptoms of COVID-19 while at Sycuan, a security officer or manager will be notified and the team member or guest will be asked to leave the property and seek evaluation from their health care provider.

Sycuan’s health and sanitation program has been reviewed and approved by the Sycuan Gaming Commission (SGC), the agency charged by law as the primary regulator for the tribe’s gaming operation and ensuring the health and safety of patrons and team members. The SGC reviewed and incorporated into their pre-opening checklist guidance from the NIGC, EPA, OSHA; the White House gating criteria and related recommendations from CDC, the California Governor’s office, California Department of Public Health, San Diego County Public Health Department; requirements of the tribal/state compact; as well as various other industry standards and best practices. In all, the casino management team were expected to comply with over 700 individual compliance measurers before certification.

March 27, 2020 Update: Temporary Closure Notice

TEMPORARY CLOSURE NOTICE

The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation has announced that the temporary closure of Sycuan Casino Resort will be extended until further notice as there are too many unknowns to confidently provide a date.

Sycuan Team Members will continue to receive their full benefits package through at least April 30, 2020. Those Team Members who were still employed when the full closure was announced, will receive pay through April 3, 2020. Beyond that date, Team Members will be able to use their PTO balances and/or apply for unemployment benefits. Guests will also receive full refunds for any hotel reservations booked during this extended period.

“While we originally indicated this was to last until March 31, it has become clear that is not possible,” said Cody J. Martinez, Chairman, Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation. “We are as anxious as everyone to reopen and get back to normal. We are paying close attention to what our public health professionals are saying, the actions of our elected leaders and the decisions of others who own businesses. At this point, the businesses that are closed will remain closed until it is clear from a public health and safety perspective that the regional restrictions in place will be lifted. We are all in this together and we will get through this together and hopefully that is very soon. We appreciate and value the hard work and dedication from our team members and know and believe that the future is bright for Sycuan.”

March 13, 2020 Update: Property-wide Precautions

Sycuan Takes Several Additional Property-Wide Precautions to Protect Guests
Postponement of Concerts, Major Events and Temporarily Closing Venues

Sycuan Casino Resort announced today that the organization is taking several additional precautionary measures throughout the property amid coronavirus concerns. Sycuan’s top priority is the health, safety and security of its guests, team members and the surrounding community.

After thoughtful consideration and closely monitoring developments, Sycuan is taking the following swift action to further protect its guests and team members:

“We are taking every precaution to protect our guests and team members and are fully committed to the health and well-being of the San Diego Community at large,” said Robert Cinelli, General Manager, Sycuan Casino Resort. “We have a dedicated team who is closely monitoring updates and we will continue to make quick and necessary changes as more information becomes available. Nothing is more important to the Sycuan family than the safety of our guests and team members”.

Additionally, The Sycuan Tribal Council took immediate action to ensure that none of its team members will be negatively affected by the temporary closures.

“To offset any negative impacts our team members may potentially experience due to the extenuating circumstances of the COVID-19 outbreak, the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation Tribal Council has approved immediate changes to our employee leave policy,” said Cody Martinez, Chairman, Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation. “It is important to us that we ensure the livelihood of our team members as schools are being closed across the county and as we choose to take the precautionary measures listed above. The changes include, but are not limited to; two weeks of paid leave with no impact to paid time off for any team member who has been displaced by temporary closures and additional measures for team members who have fallen ill or have been impacted by the care and custody of their children. We would like to thank our team members for their patience and understanding as we work through this unprecedented circumstance. We will get through this difficult time together.”
