The casino that bills itself as being “minutes away, miles apart” is rolling out a new ad campaign, which positions itself as the place for those who like to gamble.

THE US GRANT reopened yesterday as horns blared, pigeons flew and confetti filtered from the sky like snow. San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders thanked the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation for restoring the downtown landmark and “returning it to everyone in San Diego.”

Ulysses S. Grant Jr. built the hotel in 1910 to honor his father, the Civil War general who as president set aside 640 acres in 1875 for the tribe in eastern San Diego County. Ulysses S. September 25, 2006 - The Kumeyaay Indians have occupied the region for some 10,000 years. Now, at long last, they have an official flag.

A newly made flag representing the Kumeyaay-Diegueño Nation will be flown for the first time Friday at Cabrillo National Monument in Point Loma. It will be hoisted alongside flags of the United States, Mexico, Portugal and Spain for the 5:30 p.m. opening ceremonies of the National Park Service's annual Cabrillo Festival.

The flag's creation has been in the works for more than a year, inspired by an elder from the Jamul tribe and approved by a committee of leaders of the region's 12 bands of Kumeyaay – or Diegueño, as some prefer to be called – Indians...more

Sycuan Reaches Agreement with Governor on Amended Compact
Extension to 2030 Will Provide More than $1 Billion
in New General Fund Revenues

San Diego, CA (August 30, 2006) – The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation has reached an agreement with Governor Arnold Swarzenegger to extend until December 31, 2030 its existing gaming Compact with the State. In return for agreeing to a nearly ten-fold increase in payments to the State for its existing 2,000 slot machines ($20 million per year), and significant changes to various regulatory provisions in its existing compact, the new agreement will allow the Tribe to operate up to an additional 3,000 slot machines on its Indian lands. Under the amended agreement, Sycuan will pay the State 15% of its net win on additional machines. Payments to the State would exceed $1 billion over the term of the amended compact...more

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Victims of violent crime in San Diego will be able to get immediate help thanks to a partnership program unveiled today by District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and other community leaders.

The San Diego Victims Emergency Relief Fund will steer aid to people right after they've been victimized, instead of making them wait for restitution from the state, Dumanis said. We've all seen the headlines lately: Indians don't pay their taxes. Their casinos are growing bigger by the day, with no consideration given to off-reservation impacts. They don't comply with state laws, and they exploit loopholes. Basically, Indians just aren't doing right by the people of California .
