San Diego, CA (November 9, 2006) - As a graduate of the Dehesa School,  Director of the Sycuan Education Department and a Tribal Council member, Nubia Ruiz has first-hand knowledge about what is needed in the Dehesa Valley when it comes to education.  In her newest role as an elected member of the Dehesa Valley School Board, Ruiz has plans to work on increasing enrollment and improving attendance at the kindergarten through sixth grade elementary school.

“I hope my experiences serving on the school’s planning committee and in the Sycuan Education Department will help me be able to better connect the community and the school,” said Ruiz.  “I believe every child can be successful.  Those of us who work in and with the public school system have a responsibility to make this happen.”

The Dehesa School Board oversees the 184 students that attend the elementary school as well as the 600-student charter school which serves home schooled students in grades k-12.  Ruiz was elected from a field of five candidates for three open seats on the Board.

At the Sycuan Education Department, Ruiz has helped to establish programs for infants and toddlers, preschool children, and school age students from kindergarten through high school.  She has also helped to develop curriculum that teaches the history and traditions of the Kumeyaay heritage.

The Sycuan Tribal Government operates one of the region's premier Indian gaming and resort facilities, the Sycuan Resort and Casino.  The Sycuan Tribe demonstrates its strong commitment to the San Diego region through its support of civic and charitable organizations.  The Tribe through the Sycuan Tribal Development Corporation (STDC) also seeks to reinvest back into the San Diego community with a progressive business development effort.  To date, STDC has purchased the Singing Hills Country Club and the historic U.S. Grant Hotel, and is an investor in Hotel Solamar near Petco Park, and is owner/developer of the Marina Gateway Hotel and Conference Center in National City.  The Tribe also owns and operates Sycuan Ringside Promotions, the country's first tribally owned boxing promotion company.
