On October 17, the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation will re-open the doors to THE US GRANT revealing for the first time, the extensive renovation program the tribe embarked on to upgrade the historic landmark to a five-star hotel. The multi-million dollar renovations encompassed every aspect of the hotel from the 270 guest rooms to the legendary Grant Grill and Lounge. To honor the hotel's history, the Sycuan Tribe will coincide the re-opening of the hotel with the 96th anniversary of her original opening in the fall of 1910.
Unique to THE US GRANT, the first floor will be home to a cultural and historical center, which will celebrate the colorful history of the hotel, San Diego , the Sycuan Tribe and the Native American people. The cultural center will give a one-of-a-kind look at how San Diego evolved into the famous city it is today. Visitors will also find the complete contents of a time capsule dedicated by Ulysses S. Grant Jr. in 1907.
Sycuan purchased the hotel in 2003 for $45 million. The purchase of THE US GRANT held a special significance for the Tribe; in 1875 President Grant issued an executive order establishing the boundaries of Sycuan's current reservation. The acquisition of the hotel was through the Sycuan Tribal Development Corporation (STDC). STDC is the business development arm of the Sycuan Tribe. Its purpose is to expand and diversify the economic base of the tribal government, thereby ensuring the future well being of tribal members and the broader San Diego community through job retention and creation and tax generation.
THE US GRANT represents Sycuan's single-biggest investment, and is an example of quality development the tribe is willing to support.
