San Diego, CA - Sycuan Capital Management, Inc. (Sycuan Capital), the first Tribal-owned registered investment adviser, launched the Sycuan US Value Fund (Fund), a series of the Sycuan Funds. Sycuan Capital is the investment adviser of the Fund and has responsibility for the Fund's affairs. Sycuan Capital has engaged Brandes Investment Partners, LLC (Brandes) to act as the investment sub-adviser of the Fund, which was launched on October 10, 2003. This action is believed to be the first example of a tribal nation entering into the financial services sector.
Sycuan Tribal Council member Henry Murphy, Fund President, stated, "As Native Americans, we must join together to address the real issues that affect tribal communities and particularly our children's future. The launch of the Sycuan Funds is an important step in educating Native American's on the importance of long-term investments and self-reliance."
Murphy noted that the Fund will not only focus on investments from Native Americans, but will also seek investments from public and private companies, pension plans, and 401K's." There is no question that the team we have put together with Sycuan Funds brings substantial management experience to the table and provides a platform that has not previously been available to such investors", stated Murphy.
The Sycuan US Value Fund seeks capital appreciation. The management team follows the "Graham and Dodd" approach, looking at each stock as though it is a business that is for sale. The management team buys stocks at what it believes are favorable prices. The team looks for companies with the potential for appreciation over the business cycle, as well as a margin of safety against price declines.
